Teaching in Uganda classroomMy last visit to Uganda was in 2008, but the memory of the people I met will stay with me forever: An older woman who had lost a foot to a landmine, and now sells hand-made beads. The little kids who giggled for my camera and the very polite schoolboys who wanted to hear all about presidential candidate Obama. The disabled woman who actually danced to welcome us, although she couldn’t walk. The thirtyfive women who rode a bus for nine hours to get to our workshop. The ladies who were delighted to receive reading glasses and that we brought from the Dollar Store at home. Their stories prove it: just a little bit of help can change lives.

The women we started working with in 2005 have taken over our programs and made them their own. They are feeding malnourished children, providing school supplies for orphans, setting up vocational training and small businesses, helping the disabled, and teaching other women about everything from nutrition to gender equality. Most important, they keep reaching out to new communities and inspiring them to take the same kinds of initiative.

The people of Uganda, especially the women, know how to develop and run their own programs. That’s their role, and ours begins right here, with our donations.
